Transitioning from the private sector to the public sector can be a challenging task, especially for procurement professionals. However, with the increasing trend of procurement professionals wanting to secure a role in public sector procurement, it is essential to have the right tools and skills to make a successful transition. ?

As the Director of Supply Chain & Procurement recruitment at Sanderson, I have seen many professionals attempt to make the switch from the private sector to the public sector. While there are many reasons for this trend, such as job security and incremental annual salary increases, it is vital to develop public sector procurement experience and add a public sector brand to your CV to stand out to potential employers.

Here are some tips that can help you transition from the private to the public sector:

- Take on temporary, interim, or contract assignments in the public sector: This is a great way to develop public sector procurement experience and gain exposure to the unique challenges and requirements of the public sector. These assignments can help you add valuable experience to your resume and demonstrate to potential employers that you have a deep understanding of public sector procurement.

- Complete the Certificate in Public Procurement: The Institute of Public Administration (IPA) runs a comprehensive course in public procurement that focuses on best practices in the public sector. This course is an excellent way to gain a solid understanding of the public procurement process, develop your skills, and demonstrate your commitment to the public sector to potential employers.

- Network with peers at procurement events and conferences: Networking is a great way to stay informed about new opportunities in the public sector. Attend conferences and events where you can meet other procurement professionals and stay informed about new developments and job openings.

In conclusion, transitioning from the private sector to the public sector can be challenging, but it is possible with the right tools and skills. By taking temporary assignments, completing the Certificate in Public Procurement, and networking with peers, you can develop the necessary experience and knowledge to secure a role in public sector procurement.
